The route
Machame Gate › Shira Camp 2 › Barranco Camp › Barafu Camp › Uhuru Peak › Mweka
Machame is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro, and popular for good reason. It climbs through more distinct zones than the others, from rainforest to moorland to alpine desert, and the scenery changes daily.
Its profile naturally follows the climb-high, sleep-low pattern that helps the body adjust, particularly around the Barranco and Karanga camps.
It is steeper in places than Marangu and you sleep in tents throughout. Eight days is a reasonable balance between time and acclimatisation.
Who it suits
- Trekkers with eight days and reasonable fitness
- Anyone wanting the most scenically varied of the three
- Those happy to camp
How we adjust it
Every one of our journeys is a starting point. We lengthen or shorten them, make them private, change the comfort level, swap a park, or add the coast. Tell us your dates and what matters most and we will shape it around you.
Ready when you are
Tell us roughly when you want to travel and what you would like to see. We take it from there.
